All Kenya Moot court competition

Riara University participated in the 4th Edition of the All Kenya Moot Court Competition at Kenyatta University, Parklands Campus On Friday 26th and Saturday 27th February, 2016. The theme of the competition was ‘Enhancing the Protection of Wildlife through Effective Prosecution of Environmental Crimes.’ The event was sponsored and supported by UNEP, the Government of Kenya, JMiles Arbitration firm, and Transparency International, among others.

Riara University had two teams participating, each in different categories. The first team was comprised of Samia Nazareth and Diana Ongwae who participated in the Appellate Category. The team did amazingly well and managed to reach the quarterfinals. They also received rave reviews from numerous judges. The second team was comprised of Josiah Wamwere and Lemuel Abishua, who participated in the newly introduced Arbitration Category. The RU team mooted before notable arbitrators including partners of the arbitration firm JMiles and the Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, among others. The team also received positive remarks from the judges.

During their preparation for the competition, both teams managed amazing feats by teaching themselves legal units they had not yet been taught in the classroom. By choosing to challenge themselves, the teams decided to utilize the support of senior students and the University Library to teach themselves these fields. The first team learned the Law of Evidence, Criminal Procedure as well as become well versed with the Wildlife and Conservation Act. The second team also learnt several fields during preparation including Public International Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Commercial Law.
