Public Lecture: Community Land under Kenya’s New Constitution

 

Riara Law School is delighted to invite you to its second Law Review Action Thursday, which will be held on 29 November 2012, in Room 2/16, at the Riara University Building, beginning 3 PM to 530 PM.

Come hear our special guest and law reviewer, Ms. Soipan Tuya, talk about her work with the Government Task Force on the Community Land Bill.  The title of her presentation is Community Land under Kenya’s New Constitution.  Here is an opportunity to dissect, with the help of an expert, the important legal issues arising from the Community Land Bill, and to share your thoughts on the role of land and law in everyday life.

The Riara Law Review Action Thursday is a forum dedicated to improving the delivery of legal education in Kenya and promoting excellence in national discourse.

Biography

  • Rosalind Soipan Tuya is a Land Tenure and Gender Specialist with experience in development work spanning over 8 years.
  • She is currently working on a project whose main objective is to enhance women’s access to customary justice in land rights.  The project aims to promote community-based dispute resolution practices by aligning them with Kenya’s new constitution.  It is funded by USAID and LANDESA.  (LANDESA is a global NGO that supports the establishment of efficient property law regimes around the world.  USAID is the United States Agency for International Development).
  • She also has expertise in the legal issues arising from the reclamation of the Mau Forest Complex.
  • She is a member of the Government Task Force on the Community Land Bill.
  • She holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Sustainable International Development from the University of Washington School of Law, Seattle, USA.
  • She is an Advocate of the High Court.
  • She is a member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the Global Indigenous Women Caucus.
